The very first luxury villa developed by Chitra and Roman Stern at Martinhal Beach was Villa number 2, “Villa Andalucia” – completed in 2004. This beach villa immediately attacted international attention by winning a Homes Overseas Award for “Best Portuguese Villa” – which was a huge achievement as it was against very established players in the market at the time. The villa design formed the blueprint for all the other luxury villas that Chitra and Roman designed at Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel going forward – from the individual beach villas with luxury materials, underfloor heating and heated pools, to the Vilas Mimosa – a series of 23 lovely townhouses at the North of the property, and finally to the Village Houses in the resort complex. Chitra and Roman Stern worked with architects Quinta Design from Quinta do Lago/ Vale do Lobo to design the first villa – “Villa Andalucia”. The inspiration was drawn from the Andalucian design of having a central courtyard in the middle of the house – giving a natural ventilation system and lots of natural light in the house. The materials used were Portuguese – including the moleanos stone in various places in the house and the terracotta tiles. The special double-slant roof for each section of the house conferred a very luxurious feel both inside and outside the villa. Both the upstairs and the downstairs have superb views onto Martinhal Beach and Martinhal bay. It was also the first villa in Sagres to have underfloor heating and a heated pool. The designers envisaged the owner of the villa/ holiday-maker staying in the villa enjoying views onto Martinhal Beach whether relaxing indoors in the master bedroom of the villa, in the living room, or outdoors in the sun. The villa was innovative for its time and still holds a special memory for Chitra and Roman Stern as it was the villa that led to their success at Martinhal Beach, Sagres.
